Christmas Stocking Fillers
As with a lot of traditions no one really knows where they came from, however, there is one prevailing story about the Christmas stocking. The story differs slightly depending on who tells it but it goes something like this… A recently widowed man and father to 3 girls were struggling to make ends meet, St Nicholas heard about the man and wanted to help but knew he would not accept charity. Instead, one night, St Nicholas slid down their chimney and filled the stockings of the 3 girls (which were drying by the fire) with golden coins.
This tale led to children laying socks by the fireplace (the biggest ones they could find) and eagerly awaiting gifts from Santa Clause. Since then there are now special stockings that you can buy or even sacks for Santa to fill with gifts.
Did you know that it is believed that children who haven’t been good will receive only lumps of coal in their stockings!? If that’s not a reason to behave, I don’t know what is.
